The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Chief Officer Awards were announced April 8, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person June 4.
Next is Jenae Shank, executive assistant at Diné Development Corp., and a finalist in the Executive Assistant of the Year category. In this spotlight, she reflects on key achievements, offers advice for those following a similar path, shares current priorities and more.
What key achievements did you have in 2024 / 2025?
I’ve had the privilege of contributing to numerous high-impact initiatives requiring careful planning, discretion, and creativity. While some of my most meaningful accomplishments remain proprietary, one highlight I can share was coordinating an executive leadership summit from concept to completion, which delivered an amazing experience for all attendees.
I also organized C-suite off-site meetings and events, often with minimal notice. A particularly rewarding moment was curating personalized gifts for our senior leaders. This effort combined strategic planning with thoughtful, individual touches. The response from the team reminded me of the value of meaningful, behind-the-scenes support.
Additionally, I trained two new executive assistants and developed a plan for regular check-ins across all levels of our support staff, helping ensure alignment and strong collaboration across the team.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
My focus is to continue growing as a trusted partner to our leadership team while aligning my work with DDC’s mission of excellence, integrity, and purpose. My executives have demanding schedules, which keep me continually seeking smarter, more efficient ways to anticipate their needs.
I am also committed to understanding and honoring the culture of the Navajo Nation, which reinforces our collective responsibility to lead with purpose and give back meaningfully.
As DDC advances in AI and use case discovery, I’m eager to support those initiatives. I believe in the potential of technology to enhance productivity, drive efficiencies, and elevate our impact.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
It takes a special person to be an Executive Assistant. Being an EA requires character, motivation, loyalty, and trust. It’s about becoming a true partner in progress — someone who leads quietly, listens closely, and moves with intention. Sometimes, what matters most isn’t what’s on their calendar, it’s how you manage it. And other times, it’s about the little things. Listen carefully and then focus on needs and how you can help.
Build strong relationships with their leaders and the entire team. Determine everyone’s needs, anticipate challenges, and simplify their lives.
The most influential support often comes from those who lead quietly, with grace, grit, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Your presence doesn’t always need to be seen, but your value should always be felt.
