George Mason University (GMU) has named Dr. John Hillen executive in residence and professor of practice for the School of Management. Dr. Hillen most recently served as CEO of Sotera Defense Solutions, a mid-tier national security technology company, until May 2013. Dr. Hillen continues to represent the company as Vice Chairman.

Read our interview with Hillen on the appointment here.

Prior to leading Sotera, Dr. Hillen was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs from 2005 to 2007. In that role, he was the senior State Department official responsible for coordinating America’s diplomatic strategy with military operations. He also oversaw the Department’s policies on international security, security assistance, defense trade, military operations and weapons removal and abatement.

“The School of Management and George Mason are uniquely connected in myriad ways to the innovation engines of the economy in the Washington, D.C., area,” Dr. Hillen said in a GMU announcement. “I’m excited to be a part of that.”

“The school’s commitment to leadership in the community as well as academic excellence and expertise in the government contracting space make it a singular leader in business and executive education for the key industry in our area,” Dr. Hillen went on to say.

“John Hillen’s experience managing the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs coupled with a number of diverse successes as a private sector business leader makes him a superb addition to the academic staff. However, I think the greatest asset John brings to the School of Management is his genuine passion for continual learning. Case in point, he maintains a spreadsheet longer than the 10K of most public companies that details the books he loves, is currently reading, and has in queue to be read! John’s enthusiasm for the acquisition and application of knowledge will be contagious with GMU students,” said Mark HuYoung, Managing Director, Northwind Partners.

Dr. Hillen is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Professional Services Council (PSC) and serves on several other boards of directors in the government contracting and defense and security sectors, to include SOS International (SOSi) and Software AG Government Solutions.
