The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Chief Officer Awards were announced April 8, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person June 4.
Next is Kathleen Dickson, vice president and chief financial officer at A-TEK Inc., and finalist in the Private CFO of the Year Award (annual revenue less than $100 million) category. Here, she talks professional achievements, focus areas going forward, shaping the next generation of leaders and more.
What key achievements did you have in 2024/2025?
One of the biggest highlights of 2024–2025 was helping lead the organization through a period of significant growth as we successfully graduated to a large business. That transition brought both opportunities and challenges, and I’m proud of how we strengthened our financial infrastructure and operational processes along the way.
We improved forecasting, streamlined internal workflows, and aligned strategic planning more closely with mission priorities—making our teams more agile and informed. It wasn’t just about scaling—it was about scaling smart, with clarity, accountability, and a shared focus on long-term success.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
Going forward, I’m really focused on making sure we’re running efficiently, using our resources wisely, and setting ourselves up for long-term success. That means tightening up our financial processes, being more strategic with how we plan and invest, and making sure our systems support the way our teams actually work. These things may sound operational, but they’re key to delivering on our mission—because when we’re running smoothly behind the scenes, our people can focus on making real impact.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Be curious, stay teachable, and don’t be afraid to start where you are. Some of the best growth happens when you say yes to the things that stretch you — even if you don’t feel 100% ready. Find mentors, ask questions, and learn from every seat at the table. And most importantly, lead with integrity and kindness — your reputation will always matter more than your résumé.
What is something about you that most people do not know?
I’m a proud Peruvian native with a deep love for the beach — it’s my happy place and where I feel most at peace. I’m also a big dog person, and I genuinely enjoy organizing things — whether it’s a closet, a project, or a chaotic to-do list. There’s something satisfying about bringing a little order to the chaos.
