In this episode, Camille Tuutti is joined by Luwanda Jones, the deputy chief information officer in the Office of Strategic Sourcing at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Luwanda’s story takes us on a fascinating journey marked by twists and transformative moments.
Raised in Danville, Virginia, by her grandparents, Luwanda learned early the values of integrity, honesty and commitment. Though poor, her childhood was rich in love. She grew up with dreams of becoming a model or an airline stewardess but had no guidance or exposure to these careers.
A turning point came in high school when a guidance counselor, noticing Luwanda’s good grades, urged her to take the SAT and apply for colleges. Despite never thinking about college and lacking preparation, Luwanda made her way to Norfolk State University.
Unexpectedly choosing psychology as a major during orientation, Luwanda found an inherent love for the subject. From there, her adventurous path led her to ROTC and a fulfilling career in the U.S. Army. She went on to serve nearly three decades.
The journey didn’t stop there. After the military, Luwanda joined the Department of Veterans Affairs, reflecting her unwavering commitment to service and leadership. Now, she continues to strive for self-improvement, pursuing higher education and a doctorate in business administration.
