The finalists for WashingtonExec’s 2023 Pinnacle Awards were announced Sept. 25, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 16.

Next is Systems Security Officer finalist in the Private & Public Companies Sarah Barnhart, who is vice president of security at CAES. Here, she shares her primary focus areas going forward, how she’s helping to shape the next generation of leaders and more.

What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the future of the nation?

Primary focus areas going forward is how to leverage AI, especially in a historically old-fashioned function like security. Continue to be on the forefront of discussions and be a true partner with the business on how we as a company can leverage this emerging technology.

How do you help shape the next generation of government leaders/industry leaders?

I’m grateful to be in a position where I can give the next generation opportunities to have a seat at the table. When there are opportunities to include them in a meeting, presentations, project, etc., I do it! Not only lead by example, but embrace the next generation by giving them more “at bats.”

Which rules do you think you should break more as a government/industry leader?

For security, I think we should break the checklist mentality, and dive into navigating the grey areas. Being involved on the front end of discussions and helping the business to find acceptable solutions along the way. Rather than being late to the game and being a roadblock to progress.
