What was a turning point or inflection point in your career?
The turning point or inflection point in my career can be traced back to my first CISO role at the Department of Justice, where I had the unique opportunity to work in support of a U.S. Federal mission. This experience fundamentally transformed the way I approached my career and instilled in me a newfound perspective on several key aspects.
First, this role marked my initiation into the world of Federal Public Service. Prior to this, I had worked in various sectors, but my entry into the federal government was a defining moment. It meant that I was now contributing directly to National Security and the well-being of our nation and its citizens, a responsibility I took with utmost seriousness.
Second, my time as a CISO at DOJ shifted my mindset from thinking purely in terms of business to emphasizing the importance of the mission. While the corporate world often focuses on profitability, in the public sector, it’s the mission that takes precedence. Ensuring the security of sensitive information and protecting the interests of justice and public safety became my paramount concern.
Furthermore, this role underscored the immense value of cybersecurity and privacy. Working with an organization as critical as the DOJ made me acutely aware of the consequences of security breaches and data vulnerabilities. It reinforced the notion that safeguarding sensitive information is not just a matter of compliance but an ethical obligation to the citizens we serve. Unfortunately, being in the middle of few serious security events, taught me the importance of the Cybersecurity triad of CIA!
Lastly, my experience as a CISO at DOJ ignited a passionate desire within me to give back to the field of cybersecurity, which is in constant need of skilled professionals and innovative solutions. Recognizing the critical role that cybersecurity plays in our modern world, I became dedicated to contributing my knowledge, expertise, and energy to enhance the resilience of our digital infrastructure and protect the privacy and security of individuals and organizations. I have served in multiple organizations and universities to develop the Cyber workforce in their Cybersecurity Centers of Excellences.
Receiving two recognitions from DOJ and SANS for my contributions, serves me daily as a reminder of the importance of our work in safeguarding critical systems and data. While they recognize past achievements, they also inspire me to continue striving for excellence and innovation in the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity. I am grateful for the trust and support of my colleagues, mentors, and the broader cybersecurity community.
In summary, my first CISO role at DOJ, where I worked to support a mission was a pivotal moment in my career that changed my perspective from business to mission, introduced me to federal public service, highlighted the value of cybersecurity and privacy, and ignited a passionate commitment to giving back to the field. It set the course for my career in a direction that aligns with my values and the greater good of society.
