The finalists for WashingtonExec’s 2023 Pinnacle Awards were announced Sept. 25, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 16.

Next is Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Executive of the Year finalist in the Private & Public Companies category Combiz Abdolrahimi, who is the emerging technology and innovation leader for Deloitte Consulting’s Government & Public Services Practice. Here, he shares his what has made him successful in his current role and career advice.

What has made you successful in your current role?

Success, especially in a field as intricate as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, isn’t just about implementing policies; it’s about understanding stories. And my success stems from that very belief. I’ve always prioritized genuine, heartfelt conversations over mere metrics. Every initiative I’ve launched, be it in government or in the private sector, had its genesis in a real story, a lived experience. By connecting with people, understanding their journeys, their challenges, and their aspirations, I’ve been able to craft solutions that resonate on a deeply personal level.

Of course, my background as a public policy expert and international human rights lawyer equipped me with the skillset to navigate complex scenarios, but it’s the human element that’s been my compass. My collaborations, from working at the highest levels of government and industry, have always revolved around the core principle of humanity first. And, this approach, combined with a relentless drive to eradicate systemic biases and champion inclusivity, has been the cornerstone of my success.

What’s your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?

First, hats off to anyone aspiring to make a difference in this realm! Now, if you’re looking to tread this path, remember that the DEI journey is as much about listening as it is about leading. It’s easy to get caught up in the jargon and the strategy, but always ground yourself in the stories of real people.

Stay curious. The world is evolving, and with it, the intricacies of diversity and inclusion. So, never stop learning. Attend seminars, read extensively, but most importantly, engage in conversations ⏤ even the uncomfortable ones.

Build genuine relationships, not just networks. The strength of your impact lies in the authenticity of your connections. Every collaboration, mentorship, or initiative should stem from a genuine desire to uplift and empower.

Lastly, be patient and tenacious. Change, especially systemic change, doesn’t happen overnight. There’ll be hurdles, setbacks, even moments of doubt. But hold onto your ‘why’, the reason you embarked on this journey. It’s that burning passion, that unyielding commitment to a more inclusive world, that will see you through.

And as you progress, lift others. Mentorship is invaluable. As I’ve benefited from the wisdom of those before me, ensure you’re also paving the way for those coming after you. Because, in the end, DEI isn’t just about one’s individual journey, but about the collective progress of us all.
