President, Nuclear and Environmental Services Business Group, HII’s Mission Technologies
In addition to his current position, Michael Lempke takes pride in serving as the chairman of the board of managers for Newport News Nuclear-BWXT Los Alamos. This joint venture, led by HII, has been responsible for executing the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the Energy Department’s Office of Environmental Management since 2018.
N3B’s mission centers around sustainability, encompassing the protection of water quality, land cleanup and the off-site shipment of waste generated from Los Alamos National Laboratory operations prior to 1999. Lempke takes pride in the team’s numerous achievements, including the collection of over 17,000 water samples and the transportation of more than 11,000 m3 of mixed/low-level radioactive waste off-site.
“Michael and his team have done an exceptional job applying HII’s nuclear expertise to critical Department of Energy work in New Mexico, South Carolina and Nevada, and they’ve positioned HII for growth in other states,” said Andy Green, president of HII Mission Technologies. “With Michael’s fierce focus on mission during the past seven years, his team successfully accomplished their commitments, and I’m proud of the culture they’ve created and how it’s grounded in HII’s values: integrity, safety, respect, engagement, responsibility and performance.”
Looking ahead, Lempke’s team is focused on engaging with industrial partners to deliver new nuclear power for commercial use. They foster constructive partnerships with technology providers and construction firms, forming a strong team to drive successful project outcomes and promote carbon-free nuclear solutions. Leveraging HII’s capabilities in nuclear power, they aim to benefit employees, stakeholders and the environment.
“Environmental security is national security,” Lempke said. “National security is focused on the preservation of freedom. Our team partners with customers and other stakeholders to ensure citizens in the communities in which we live and work have the freedom to drink clean water, the freedom to hike on trails and enjoy the beauty of nature, and the freedom to rest assured that we are committed to leaving the world better than we found it.”
