The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Pinnacle Awards were announced Oct. 11, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 30.
Next is Executive Assistant of the Year (Public Company) finalist Wendy Choate, who’s senior executive assistant to the president of Salesforce Public Sector. Here, she talks success in her current role, proud organizational moments, career advice and more.
What has made you successful in your current role?
Over the years, I have had many people ask me why I picked this profession. This has always been an easy question for me to answer. Not everyone can do this job. One must have patience, be empathetic and have great organizational skills. I have never said ⏤ “this is not in my job description” ⏤ any given task will only make me grow as an individual and as an EA. I have always been open and available to help other employees when and if they need EA support or just someone to talk to.
What are you most proud of having been a part of in your current organization?
I am most proud of my executive team. I was given an opportunity to support the president of global public sector a few months ago. Over these few months, I have learned so much and I am so proud to be a part of this amazing group of individuals. I am most proud of this executive team ⏤ what they represent and how they represent our company.
What’s your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
One must know that not everyone can or will be a good admin. It really takes a special person to be able to do this job. Patience, understanding and work ethic are key traits to have.
Patience: You will always have to interact with so many different personalities and at times you will have to deal with someone that doesn’t see you as someone important enough. Little do they know that you are most likely juggling several other requests at the same time.
Understanding: Understanding that everyone thinks their task is more important than the others. It is up to you to know which needs to be completed first and which task is more urgent.
Work ethic: if you love your job, you give 150% ⏤ if you hate your job, you give 150% (while you look for another role).
