The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Pinnacle Awards were announced Oct. 8, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place virtually Nov. 12.

Next up is Executive Assistant of the Year (Private Company) finalist Tiffany Miller, who’s executive assistant at Computer Systems Center Inc. Here, she talks success, learning from failures and other career advice.

What has made you successful in your current role?

I have over 14 years’ experience in a Fortune 500 company. During this time, I was working a full-time job and studying to obtain my bachelor’s degree in business administration. Throughout my tenure there, I was given the opportunity to learn and perform multiple positions. Being in an always-changing environment, I needed the capability to adapt to various work conditions.

This allowed me to transition into my current role the use of my customer service and technical skills on a daily basis, while working with staff performing a wide range of administrative and operational skills. I’m highly motivated and resourceful and this allows me to be successful in my current role.

What are you most proud of having been a part of in your current organization?

My proudest achievement has been able to provide on-site support during the COVID-19 pandemic. I handled the day-to-day operations for the executive office. I was the liaison between the executives, team leaders and off-site employees. I provided ongoing communication and preparations to maintain a safe and productive working environment, during this time. Working diligently with a broad range of employees and clients. I coordinated key functions that allowed the office to run effectively. Having the responsibility for creating and editing briefs and PowerPoint presentations. Performing final review of documents and contracts.

I’m always willing to take advantage of opportunities and different projects within my organization. My role is always evolving.

What’s one key thing you learned from a failure you had?

I’ve learned if you experience a failure regardless of whether it’s personal or professional, you should try and learn from it. Never allow it to hold you back. Analyze what caused it to go wrong. Then determine what you need to do, to be able to move forward in order not to repeat it. Meaning, do not let the failure define you. Find solutions and use it as a future achievement. Always strive to do your best!

What was your biggest career struggle and how did you overcome it?

During my career path, I’ve encountered certain challenges that many may have experienced during their career journey. At times, being recognized for duties, positions and task. I made it an initiative to always advocate for myself. Never let it hold me back, still maintain a positive attitude and work ethic that helps facilitate my career growth.

What’s your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?

My advice would be find your passion. Always excel in everything you do. Never stop learning. Be adaptable, don’t be afraid to ask questions and never stop learning. Knowledge will be the secret to your success.

Never let your doubts or insecurities keep you from taking the steps from achieving your goal. Something I’ve learned early on in my career is always be a team player, dependable and trustworthy. Never give up! You can define your career path.
