    Leidos, USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Information Sciences Institute to Partner on Research Projects

    Leidos and the University of Southern California (USC) Viterbi School of Engineering’s Information Sciences Institute announced Nov. 23 that they are collaborating on two research efforts aimed at achieving advances in the fields of network analysis and high performance computing.

    “At Leidos, one way we bring innovative solutions to our current and future customers is through our partnerships with universities,” Leidos Chief Technology Officer Dr. Gulu Gambhir said. “Our alliance with USC and the cutting edge work they do allows us to remain on the forefront of technology, while also inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists.”

    “The collaboration with Leidos is an exciting new opportunity for researchers at the USC Information Sciences Institute to exert significant real-world impact by helping to develop innovative solutions to important scientific challenges that cut across multiple industries,” USC Information Sciences Institute Executive Director and Viterbi School Vice Dean of Engineering Dr. Premkumar Natarajan said. “We are grateful to Leidos for their visionary investment in this collaboration with the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.”

    The first initiative will examine existing network analysis tools to create new algorithms to identify additional, hidden or latent connections present in networks and knowledge graphs. These insights are based on advancements in deep learning, a process through which a machine teaches itself to solve problems using algorithms and data layering.

    The second research project will focus on the performance of natural language processing (NLP) algorithms on advanced computer hardware such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), which are configurable circuits.

    Research funding for both projects is provided through a grant donated by Leidos, formerly known as Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).
