In this week’s news, we feature area executives who all have one thing in common: they’re all Hokies. Virginia Tech Alumni have made quite a dent in the Federal IT space and make it a priority to maintain connections and communication through various alumni groups. Some of the executives we talked to with Hokie backgrounds come from companies that include Deloitte, ECS Federal, NetApp, Salient Federal Solutions, Mobilegov and Buchanan & Edwards. We also looked at the evolution of Executive Assistants (EA) in the federal space. EA’s have now become more like business partners to the executives they work for. We talked to Randy Fuerst, President and COO of Oceus Networks, about his EA Barbie Sandy. No longer are EA’s just so-called secretaries with various clerical duties. They are business partners whose jobs are important aspect to the productivity and success of executives. For more on this story, click here.

WashingtonExec presented multiple interviews this week. We spoke with Nichole Gatto-Wild, Director of Human Resources for URS Federal Services, Inc. She revealed her methods for communication and employee engagement through Yammer, a private social networking site for businesses. We also interviewed Victor Vella is the Federal Business Development Manager for Panasonic North America and spoke with him about his 30 year background in law enforcement and anti-terrorism, mobility and cyber security. STEM student Taylor Culman spoke with us and talked about his STEM experience at Nysmith and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST).

Deloitte, MacAulay-Brown, Inc. (MacB), CACI, BluestoneLogic and Vistronix all announced new leadership appointments.
