Centreville, Va.-based Fulcrum announced March 13 that the company has been awarded a DARPA Biological Technologies Office (BTO) multiple award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), as a subcontractor to Schafer Corporation.

“Fulcrum has a 25 year history of providing focused technical, R&D and S&T throughout the Department of Defense,” company CEO Jeff Handy said. “We are continuously adding to our team of proven scientists and technical experts that are providing support to agencies and services within the DoD, AF and Intelligence Community (IC). We are excited to be supporting DARPA and remain committed to bring new capabilities and talent to support our soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines, DoD civilians and other contractors protecting our great nation.”

Fulcrum will contribute specialized technical expertise and support in the focus areas of Neuroscience and Brain-Machine Interface. Fulcrum’s lead senior scientist, Dr. David McMullen, was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Medicine, as well as a surgical resident in the JHU Dept. of Neurosurgery before joining Fulcrum in 2015. He investigated intra-cranial electrode neural recordings in human patients with epilepsy for use in Brain – Machine interfaces (BMIs) to control advanced robotic prosthetic limbs by means of computer vision.

DARPA BTO seeks to foster, demonstrate and transition breakthrough fundamental research and applications that integrate biology, engineering and computer science.
