New Series: Simple Secrets to Success From Execs Who Know

WashingtonExec reached out to area executives to gain insight and share local “secrets to success” stories. Today’s advice comes from Paul Leslie, CEO of Dovel Technologies.

I believe that success comes from perseverance, passion and compassion, being supportive, having impeccable integrity, great two-way communication, and a little bit of luck! Success is not something that you just find – It is a journey, the by-product of doing something very well and really enjoying it.  Here is my critical “must do” list for success.

Define a clear Vision, Mission, and set of Core Values
Set the bar high to stretch the team and remember to constantly remind everyone to walk the talk on core values
Educate people about how the business works
Knowledge will set the stage for business process consistency and decision efficiency
    Focus on leadership development
Develop our industry’s future leaders and business owners – they will appreciate it (I do)
Build a culture of learning and innovation
This is about building a supportive culture for your team
Help people to adapt to continuous change
If you are not doing this – you are not moving fast enough.  Increase the clock speed!
    Possess self-esteem without feeling self-important
You can be very successful by being yourself
    Lead by example
Roll up your sleeves – it is hard work.  There is a reason I do not wear a watch
Face change and uncertainty with confidence
We live in an age of anxiety and uncertainty – embrace it.  There will be opportunities because of it
    Listen and communicate effectively
Communicate often, listen all the time – executives don’t want surprises and neither do your employees
    Transform conflict into creative action
Careful listening, respect, confidence, and collaboration will resolve conflict.  Care about the small things and act on them quickly
Be a civic leader in the community
Get involved in the community and be willing to give something back – it’s the right thing to do!
