On October 19th, The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia (CFNOVA) hosted its annual Sweet Home Virginia Gala. Declaring the black-tie benefit a “sweet success,” area executives raised $416,500. Funds raised from ticket sales, private donations, as well as live and silent auctions will further The Community Foundation’s work to meet the most critical and immediate needs in the Northern Virginia region.

The Gala, held at the newly-renovated McLean Hilton Hotel, was attended by over 500 area executives in the government contracting, professional services, and financial sectors. Leon Harris, local ABC-7 news anchor, served as the Master of Ceremonies (MC) and for the first time, participants were able to hear directly from a recipient of the foundation’s outreach efforts.

BB&T Company was also presented with the 2012 Community Leadership Award for its nonprofit work.

The Community Foundation was established in 1978 to with the mission of serving five critical areas: child and youth development; poverty relief; health, mental health and aging; education; and members of the military and their families.

” I am proud to be a Board member of the Foundation and the great work we do for our community.  The crowd at the gala was incredibly generous, their support will go a long way in funding much needed programs. Given the tough economic situation we’ve been in, the gala exceeded our expectations,” said Dovel Technologies CEO, Paul Leslie.

To learn more about The Community Foundation and its current involvement with local initiatives, such as the Junior Achievement of Greater Washington’s Finance Park and Arlington Food Assistance Center, read our interview with Eileen Elsworth, President of The Community Foundation, here.
