The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Chief Officer Awards were announced March 17, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person May 10.
Next is Chief Operating Officer finalist in the Public & Private Company category Jerry Hogge, executive vice president and COO of CALIBRE Systems, Inc. Here, he talks about successful career moments, primary focus areas going forward and more.
What has made you successful in your current role?
My leadership approach is focused around two main areas:
First, creating the right leadership team, establishing a collaborative and trust-based culture, and then supporting, coaching, advising and leading that team to achieve their combined maximum potential.
Second, establishing the necessary and essential business and operational metrics required to fully understand the operational status, tempo and effectiveness of the organization and then using that framework and business/operational data to manage the business with full transparency.
This enables shared understanding of current and expected business and operational performance and enables the organization to effectively and efficiently operate both virtually and in person.
What are you most proud of having been a part of in your current organization?
I am most proud of my work to fundamentally restructure the leadership team across operations and growth. Through those efforts I have established a highly professional, highly integrated and high performing team of leaders, a framework within which they can operate and have set the conditions for continued operational excellence and future profitable growth.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the future of the nation?
In terms of future focus areas and our growth strategy, IT modernization, digital transformation and cloud migration represent not only one the largest market segments, but are the fastest growing areas. I see tremendous demand in data analytics, machine learning, and AI technologies and techniques.
Use of these methodologies is essential to remaining competitive, to attainment of agency mission objectives, and to remaining agile in response to changing mission objectives and operating environments.
Looking back at your career, what are you most proud of?
Throughout my 35 year career in the federal marketplace, the achievements that make me most proud are the wonderful, brilliant and driven individuals that I have brought together as a part of my leadership team, and the results that we have achieved together.
Creating the right team, establishing the best conditions for success, and then enabling these teams of great people to achieve their maximum potential is always the most rewarding part of my professional life.
