The Center for Strategic and International Studies is hosting a book launch for “On War and Politics: The Battlefield Inside Washington’s Beltway,” written by Arnold Punaro, CEO of The Punaro Group, LLC.

    A discussion with:

Sen. Sam Nunn, D-Ga., chairman emeritus, CSIS board of trustees; co-chairman and CEO, Nuclear Threat Initiative; former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., CSIS counselor, former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee

Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft, CSIS counselor and trustee, former national security adviser

Retired Marine Corps Gen. James L. Jones, CSIS trustee, former national security adviser

Retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Arnold Punaro, author, “On War and Politics,” CEO, The Punaro Group, LLC

Moderated by: John J. Hamre, president and CEO, CSIS

“Arnold Punaro is a Washington Institution who has done much of the work over the past several decades required to build the most capable military in the history of the planet….while the elected politicians have mostly taken the credit.  Bipartisan, fair, patriotic, brave, and principled.  He is a model for public service and doing things the right way,” said Dr. John Hillen, the current executive in residence and professor of practice at George Mason University’s School of Business.

“It’s been a privilege to know Arnold and his son, Joe, for many years. We can now add ‘adept author’ to Arnold’s many accolades. This book is a captivating read for those wanting a humorous, candid, and balanced look at a broad array of subjects to include the military, politics, policy, strategy, legislation, and the good, bad, and ugly of life through the personal lens of a respected Washington insider,” said Mark HuYoung, Managing Partner at NorthWind Partners.

    About the Book:
In his long-awaited memoir, Punaro presents stories from his personal and public life—from sobering accounts of his days in combat in Vietnam to colorful anecdotes about political luminaries such as John McCain, the Clintons, the Presidents Bush, Colin Powell, Robert Gates and Ash Carter; from revelations about backroom politics in the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill to insights into how decisions are really made inside the Beltway.

For almost 50 years, he has toiled at the intersection of the political and defense establishment, has served in key positions in the Pentagon, Congress and industry and has been a key participant in all the major defense and intelligence legislation of this era. Punaro’s distinguished career of public service has given him an unrivaled perspective on the events and factors that have shaped defense policy, along with a clear vision on how to solve the tough, pressing challenges facing our nation today.
