WashingtonExec, in collaboration with a number of senior executives led by CEO and Founder of TCG International ltd. Mark Chadason, is facilitating a second running of a seminar for retiring government executives seeking smooth transition to industry in a non-threatening, collegial and off-the-record environment.
The Navigating Your Transition to Industry Seminar’s pilot session in October 2015 was well received the by 17 executives, including former GS-14, three star Generals, Admirals, and SES/SISs attendees. Due to popular demand, WashingtonExec is hosting the next Navigating Your Transition to Industry Seminar Tuesday, February 16th 2016 from 12:00pm to 5:00pm in Tysons Corner.
The Navigating Your Transition to Industry Seminar will cover how federal executives should approach post-government employment and transition effectively over the crucial first 45 days after obtaining an inaugural industry job. In addition, the seminar will address how to navigate the “10 month blues” that is often experienced by those who seek employment in the private sector.
The second half of the seminar will speak to how executives can transition to their second job. The majority of new executives will leave their first post-government company after only 18 months.
Who should attend? The sessions are geared towards GS-14 executives and above who plan to head to a Director, VP, or higher position in the defense industry. This is also for executives who are planning to leave government service within 12 months and are interested in learning more about the market for executive leadership positions. For those who are already working in the industry, this seminar will also be time well spent to help prepare executives for their first company transition.
Read on about the February 16th Navigating Your Transition to Industry Speaker Lineup:
Session I speaker Mark Chadason, CEO of TCG and former SIS-4 at the CIA, will cover Transition Techniques and Paradigm Shift (What they don’t tell you at your retirement seminar). Read more about Chadason and his opinion on the impact of the Internet of Things within the broader intelligence and defense communities in his recent guest column.
Session II will be conducted by Phoebe Henderson, Executive Recruiter and Managing Director of ZRG Partners on the topic of An Executive Recruiter Perspective: The Dos and Don’ts of Interview Preparation and Building a Personal Brand in the Government Contracting Industry (online and offline).
Session III speaker Ed Glabus, Executive Director, The Veterans Consortium will tackle the Business Acumen Fundamentals, including effective business development, pipeline techniques, profit and loss, and financial statement reviews. Glabus joined The Veterans Consortium in July 2015 after working at ManTech International for 12 years. Glabus’ final position at ManTech was Executive Vice President.
Session IV speaker Frank Helmick, Vice President for Mission Solutions at SOS International LLC (SOSi), will discuss a few frequent mistakes he sees public sector strategic hires make from pursuit to capture. Helmick’s talk, entitled The First 90 Days in Industry, is for executives seeking to hold Director and higher positions in private or public companies. LTG Helmick retired from the U.S. Army after a distinguished 36-year military career. Helmick was a leader of the U.S.’s only Airborne Corps and the nation’s largest military installation.
Why we do what we do: We volunteer to run these seminars because the school of “hard knocks” is really hard. Many of those who have volunteered to help scope the Navigating Your Transition to Industry Seminar believe that there is a better way for highly-qualified government executives to transition to industry then “feeling your way around in the corporate darkness”. The learning curve for organizations with senior government executives transitioning to the private sector is large; both employers and future employees deserve an effective transition process.
At the end of the Navigating to Industry Seminar, participants will attend WashingtonExec’s Execs on the Move Committee Happy Hour with members of the WashingtonExec community and begin to build their private sector relationships six months to a year prior to public service retirement. The WashingtonExec Execs on the Move Committee was created for executives in various states of transition – ranging from re-entering the govcon industry, engaging in start-up work, consulting or serving as Board of Advisors/Directors. The committee encourages members to share experiences and gain insights on the current market and employment opportunities.
WashingtonExec views the Navigating Your Transition to Industry Seminar Series as a supplement to already well-established public sector retirement initiatives.
