This week’s WashingtonExec E-Magazine brings you the latest information on Northern Virginia Family Service’s (NVFS) 16th annual Road to Independence Gala, to be held May 9. In the e-magazine, AMERICAN SYSTEMS CEO Bill Hoover, chair of the gala, takes part in a Q&A on the event. Hoover said he was honored to accept the responsibility as the gala’s chair.
The mission of the gala is to celebrate those who’ve supported NVFS’s effort to improve the self-reliance of more than 36,000 area families each year. The group empowers local families through a range of programs including employment assistance and emergency housing, Hoover said.
The e-magazine also features an article on WashingtonExec’s inaugural STEM symposium, held March 8. With students falling behind in math and science subjects, organizers of the symposium sought to do something about it.
At the symposium, STEM leaders were able to address an audience and speak personally with elementary, middle and high school students about the importance of science, technology, engineering and math. The event played host to top local student science fair projects, former astronauts and industry STEM leaders. More than 25 key organizations involved represented education, government, industry and non-profit sectors.
Held at the Nysmith School for the Gifted in Herndon, the STEM event was unique in that it utilized the government angle in bringing across the importance of STEM subjects and the pursuit of related careers. More than 1,500 people attended the event.
Among others, headliners included Ted Cope, director of Basic and Applied Research at the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA); Sandra Magnus, an engineer, NASA astronaut and executive director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Reston; Ed Swallow, vice president of business development for Northrop Grumman’s federal and defense technologies unit; NGA’s Virginia Sargent; Rob Zitz, senior vice president and chief systems architect at Leidos; and Archis Bhandarkar, a senior at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology who plans to attend MIT.
Also featured in the e-magazine is Sonny Kakar, founder, president and chief executive officer of Sevatec. Through a featured Q&A, Kakar discussed his company, leadership approach, faith and community.
The e-magazine also features an article on Aneesh Chopra and Glen Tullman, who have joined Box as special advisors. Chopra served as the first chief technology officer of the United States and Tullman is a former Allscripts chief executive officer.
