Four employees of The MITRE Corporation received awards for their technical achievements and leadership at the 2013 Women of Color STEM Conference held in Dallas October 17-19. Salwa Abdul-Rauf, Camille Shiotsuki, Shweta Mulcare and Kappu Ramasubramanian were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the STEM field and their commitment to encouraging young women to pursue science and technical careers.
Hosted by Women of Color magazine and sponsored by Career Communications Group, Inc., the annual Women of Color STEM Conference recognizes multicultural women throughout the U.S. who excel in technical careers. The event also focuses on cultivating a pipeline of future STEM leaders.
“It is critical for the future of our country that we develop the next generation of STEM professionals, and these four women are making a significant difference in that effort,” said Karen Quinn-Quintin, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at MITRE. “They do this not only in their day-to-day work for our sponsors, but also in the leadership roles they play within their communities. On behalf of all the MITRE officers, I congratulate these outstanding women.”
Abdul-Rauf and Shiotsuki were named Technology All-Stars, an award presented to women who demonstrate excellence in the workplace and in their communities throughout their well-established careers.
Abdul-Rauf is an expert in enterprise architecture and information systems engineering who has worked for MITRE for 14 years. One of her major accomplishments was the development of a data-driven Combined Joint Task Force architecture used by senior Department of Defense leaders in making critical program-related investment decisions. Shiotsuki, an aviation systems engineer with 20 years of service at MITRE, has supported the redesign of the airspace around New York City, a project to which she provided impact and benefit analyses.
Mulcare and Ramasubramanian won awards in the Technology Rising Star category that recognizes women with fewer than 22 years of service who are helping to shape technology for the future.
An aviation systems engineer, Mulcare joined MITRE in 2010 and has worked on a range of airspace and airport optimization and safety assessment projects for the FAA, the U.S. Air Force and several international civil aviation authorities. Ramasubramanian, a systems engineer, assisted the Food and Drug Administration with the development and implementation of Enterprise Performance Lifecycle methodology to improve its program and investment management processes. She also joined MITRE in 2010.
