WashingtonExec asked the simple question to top area executives:

“If you could give your kids only three pieces of advice, what would they be?”

Today’s insight comes from Dave Melcher, CEO and President of ITT Exelis.

    1)    Be a role model for important values like respect, responsibility, and integrity.  Treat others as you would want to be treated – the “Golden Rule” will take you far in life.

    2)    Hard work, applied in a smart manner, is usually the catalyst that creates the most opportunity for you in life.   And, in your work, be prepared to choose the “harder right” instead of the “easier wrong,” even if it means extra effort.

    3)    Always have a sense of humility in all you do, and don’t let your ego get in the way of a good decision.  Also, in life and in work, have a sense of humor, and you will lighten the load for those around you.
