As president of Systems Planning & Analysis, Terry Benedict spent the past year integrating four acquisitions while keeping the company growing through what he calls a “particularly dynamic period” in the industry.
Benedict is a finalist for WashingtonExec’s Chief Officer Awards in the Private & Public Company DOD Executive of the Year category. The event takes place live June 2.
In this spotlight, he discusses SPA’s integration of four acquisitions over the past year, how the company navigated a changing defense environment, and the leadership priorities shaping its growth strategy.
What key achievements did you have in 2025/2026?
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of over the past year was SPA’s ability to continue growing and delivering for clients during a particularly dynamic period across government and industry. A major focus throughout the year was successfully integrating four acquisitions: Proximity, Intrepid, Red Six and Group W. These additions expanded SPA’s capabilities across modeling and simulation, wargaming, digital engineering, enterprise modernization and counter-UAS.
At the same time, we remained focused on maintaining the quality of our delivery to clients while continuing to invest in technical innovation, employee development and capabilities that support evolving national security missions.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
I am focused on leading our client-facing teams at SPA in a rapidly changing environment, accelerating mission delivery, enabling flexible, technology-driven solutions, and advancing integrated models backed by targeted investments in client support, employee development and initiatives that strengthen our leadership in the national security market.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
In fast-evolving national security environments, I tell leaders they must continue learning, stay curious, pursue difficult problems, lead with integrity and humility, and measure success by how well they prepare the next generation to surpass them.
What is something about you most people would be surprised to know?
Away from work, I’m an avid golfer, although not necessarily a very good one, who enjoys the challenge and focus the game demands.
