The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced on June 24 that during the 2010 Fiscal year (FY), from Oct 1, 2009-Sept. 30, 2010, small businesses acquired $97.95 billion in federal contracts.
The government set a goal of 23 percent of contracting dollars but the 2010 FY fell shy of this goal and received 22.7 percent. However, it is the largest single year increase in more than five years and an improvement over FY 2009. In the past year SBA increased its efforts and partnership with federal agencies to provide better opportunities for small businesses to complete and win federal contracts.
“We are proud of the achievement the government has made, but are determined that the government will meet and exceed the goal,” said SBA Administrator, Karen G. Mills. “SBA is focused on a number of key initiatives to help increase small business contracting opportunities, as well as combat fraud, waste or abuse. These efforts will ensure the benefits of our programs continue to go to the intended recipients.”
The SBA also released the FY 2010 Small Business Procurement Scorecards which assesses each agency’s yearly small business contracting accomplishment with a grade “A” through “F.” 13 agencies received an “A,” five received a “B,” four agencies obtained a “C” and only two had a “D” rating. The scorecards reflect endeavors to strengthen the integrity of the contracting data.
In order for the 23 percent goal to be met the SBA also increased opportunities for small business contracting, had a task force identify and increase opportunities for small businesses, collaborated with the White House and senior agency officials, established a women-owned small business federal contract program and also revised 8(a) business development regulations.
