President Joe Biden plans to nominate five individuals to serve in key roles. Among them is John Sherman, who will be tapped to serve as chief information officer for the Defense Department.
Sherman has nearly 25 years of experience working in national security technology and innovation across the intelligence community and DOD. He served most recently as the acting DOD CIO and earlier as the IC CIO.
Sherman previously served as deputy director of CIA’s Open Source Enterprise, where he worked on open source intelligence by leveraging new technologies and interagency partnerships.
He also led large offices at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency dealing with analysis, collection and international partnerships, and serves as a deputy national intelligence officer on the National Intelligence Council. He began his IC career as an imagery analyst and later served in the White House Situation Room.
Other nominees include Nickolas Guertin for DOD director of operational test and evaluation; Margo Schlanger for assistant secretary for civil rights in the Agriculture Department; Krista Boyd for inspector general in the Office of Personnel Management; and Robert Otto Valdez for assistant secretary for planning and evaluation in the Health and Human Services Department.
