Apigee announced that Aneesh Chopra, the former chief technology officer (CTO) of the United States, has joined Apigee’s advisory board. In this role, Chopra will provide insight and counsel as the company takes its technology platform for apps, data and APIs into new growth markets.

The company also confirmed that it has opened a new office in the Washington D.C. area to help agencies as they increasingly use technologies such as Web APIs (application programming interfaces) to make government data more open and efficient, in support of the Obama administration’s Digital Government Strategy.

“Organizations in both the public and private sector must find new ways to use data and technology to interact with the customers and constituencies they serve,” said Chopra. “I welcome the opportunity to be an advisor to Apigee, a company that is helping organizations across industries embrace digital strategies to succeed.”

Chopra was selected by President Barack Obama to be the nation’s first CTO. He served in this role from 2009 until 2012, looking at ways technology can spur innovations that help the government do a better and more efficient job. Prior to this position, Chopra was Virginia’s fourth Secretary of Technology, and before that, he was managing director for the Advisory Board Company, a health care think tank for hospitals and health systems.

Chopra will deliver a keynote address at the “I love APIs” conference, November 4-6, 2013 in San Francisco. He will discuss the promise of open innovation to unlock growth markets in health, energy and education. “I love APIs” will feature dozens of sessions led by the business and technology innovators shaping today’s exploding digital world built on apps, data and APIs.
