About $12,000 was raised at “Take a Swing at Cancer,” on June 9th at the Dulles Golf Center and Sports Park in Dulles, Va. for Bite Me Cancer’s 2nd annual fundraiser. More than 100 people participated in the fundraiser, including 14 corporate sponsorships and nine individual sponsors.
Cancer survivor and founder of “Bite Me Cancer” Nikki Ferraro, welcomed and hosted the attendees which included childhood cancer patients and thyroid cancer survivors, their families and other supporters. Some sponsors donated tickets to Bite Me Cancer so that the foundation could invite cancer survivors to attend with their families.
“I’m so happy with the great event we had, and I’m so grateful to our sponsors and attendees!” said Nikki. “I also am very encouraged by those attendees, especially the cancer survivors and their families, who told me they have been inspired by this event and Bite Me Cancer’s goals and other activities.”
This fundraiser’s proceeds will support these important Bite Me Cancer projects:
- Teen Support Programs: “A Bit of Bite Me Cancer” support bags are given to teens who are dealing with cancer, an online support group, a buddy program, support events, and more.
- Thyroid Cancer Research/Awareness: The fastest growing cancer in the country needs more research funding and awareness regarding symptoms and treatment challenges.
The foundation has a goal of raising $115,000 by the end of 2013 to support two, two‐year research grants.
Bite Me Cancer was founded in 2010 by Nikki Ferraro, then a junior at Chantilly HS, after she was diagnosed with a rare form of thyroid cancer. She is currently a junior at James Madison University and is in great health.
