The  (INSA) today announced its Board of Directors appointed Ambassador Robert (Bob) Joseph to the newly created position of Senior National Security Advisor. In this role, Ambassador Joseph will advise and provide counsel to the INSA Leadership and staff on national security and strategic issues for INSA research, events and operations.

“Ambassador Joseph is the ideal candidate for this new INSA position. His breadth of experience in both the government and academia allows him to bring to INSA not only his expertise and knowledge of the field, but his leadership and counseling abilities,” said John Negroponte, board of directors chairman ambassador, INSA . “His career within the national security community has made him an expert in U.S. policy and strategy for preventing, deterring and defending against threats to the U.S. He will be an excellent addition to the INSA leadership team.”

Ambassador Joseph is currently Senior Scholar at the National Institute for Public Policy, and is a Professor in the Department of Defense and Strategic Studies program at Missouri State University. His government service includes serving as U.S. Special Envoy for Nuclear Nonproliferation, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, as well as having served on the National Security Council as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Proliferation Strategy, Counterproliferation and Homeland Defense. Ambassador Joseph also previously worked as Professor of National Security Studies and Director/Founder of the Center for Counterproliferation Research at the National Defense University.

In a statement, Ambassador Joseph said he was honored to have been selected for his current position at INSA. He added, “INSA leads the intelligence and national security communities in policy advancement and serves as the meeting place where leaders from the public and private sector can come together to discuss critical intelligence and national security issues. My career in the national security sector will allow me to use my expertise and experience to best advise INSA leadership and staff to enhance government and private sector participation and partnership. I look forward to working with Ambassadors Negroponte and DeTrani and the rest of the INSA Board and staff to advance national security policy.”

Ambassador Joseph’s position as Senior National Security Advisor took effect on June 1st. This position was created to enable INSA to add even more value to broader national security issues, particularly in those areas where intelligence and national security policy issues intersect.
