General Dynamics today announced Thomas W. Kirchmaier has been elected as vice president of the corporation and has been appointed president of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems (GD AIS). He will report to David K. Heebner, executive vice president of the company’s Information Systems and Technology group.

Kirchmaier succeeds Lewis F. Von Thaer, who resigned in April. The appointment is effective immediately.

“Tom Kirchmaier is a seasoned executive with many years’ experience working with Department of Defense and intelligence-community customers on critical national security programs,” said Heebner. “He is an effective leader with a deep understanding of customers’ issues and challenges, as well as a proven track-record of effectively managing global organizations. Tom’s abilities will help ensure that we continue to meet our commitments to customers, employees and shareholders alike.”

Kirchmaier joined General Dynamics in 1999 through the acquisition of GTE Government Systems. He is also former senior vice president of General Dynamics Information Technology’s Global Information Services and served as senior vice president and general manager of the Intelligence Solutions division of General Dynamics Information Technology since 2007.
