Serco Inc. announced a new contract to manage repairs and upgrades for the backup electrical plant at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland.

Pituffik Space Base, formerly Thule Air Base, supports missile warning, defense and space surveillance. The base is encased in ice for nine months of the year, making reliable power crucial. Serco will build a temporary backup power plant while experts upgrade the existing system.

“This contract builds on Serco’s strengths in systems design and installation and our proven performance in defense construction,” said Tom Watson, Serco’s North America CEO. “Serco is proud to support this mission-critical upgrade for the US Army Corps of Engineers and US Space Force. We understand the importance of maintaining readiness at this key location.”

Serco has partnered with Danish engineering company Aarsleff. Once complete, the new power plant will boost electrical capacity at DOD’s northernmost base. Serco has handled similar projects at Pituffik and for other DOD clients.

The 4-year contract is valued at $323 million.
