The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Chief Officer Awards were announced March 28, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person May 10.
Next is Aileen Abragan, director of security at Valiant Integrated Services, and finalist in the Public & Private Company Chief Security Officer category. Here, she shares key achievements, focus areas going forward, career advice and more.
What key achievements did you have in 2023?
As a security professional in the defense industry, my focus is on safeguarding national security, supporting our Warfighters, and protecting our company’s information, assets, and brand. One significant achievement that contributed to this goal was successfully establishing a multi-sponsor Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility at our Herndon, Virginia, location ahead of schedule. This strategic move allowed us to avoid a lengthy lease extension at our previous San Diego location and ensured uninterrupted SAPF support for multiple customers. This coast-to-coast relocation was a testament to our strong customer partnership and collaboration.
Additionally, I had the honor of speaking as a panelist on DE&I at the AIA/NDIA Industrial Security Committee Joint Conference. Speaking alongside seasoned security professionals was a very rewarding experience and highlighted the special bond and camaraderie within the defense sector. I credit my success to the guidance of security leaders and mentors who have helped me along my journey, motivating me to pay it forward and help nurture the next generation of security leaders.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
Going forward, my goal is to ensure our employees receive comprehensive security support throughout their journey — from joining our organization to completing their service. When our team members are ready and vetted from day one, they can directly contribute to supporting our customers. This alignment is essential for mission success. Additionally, I’m actively working on aligning our security systems with other business operations. By streamlining security processing and verification, we eliminate unnecessary steps and redundancies. This efficiency directly benefits both the Warfighter and our customers, enabling them to fulfill their missions effectively.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
To those aspiring to executive positions, remember that the journey is not always glamorous. Embrace challenges, rejection and sacrifices as opportunities for growth. Rather than letting setbacks discourage you, use them as guides to find better solutions. Remember — not all problems are meant to be solved alone. Collaboration is key; trust your team and utilize company resources. Above all, approach challenges with humility and be kind.
Fun Fact: What is something about you that most people do not know about?
Outside of work, I prioritize spiritual and mental wellness through activities like hot yoga, spending time outdoors, and playing the Djembe drums. As an ice hockey mom and active-duty Marine Corps spouse, I enjoy supporting my son’s hockey team and participating in community activities. Additionally, I’m an active member of a women’s bible study group and find fulfillment in spiritual growth and community engagement.
