Amy Howland
CISO, Maxar Technologies
Amy Howland’s biggest recent achievement was spearheading a collaborative effort across cybersecurity, IT and business functions to ensure owners of devices hosted on the corporate network take accountability, by informing the Information Security team of the assets they own and taking the initiative to reduce vulnerabilities on the network.
Taking these actions enables the CISO team to have holistic visibility and helps to build relationships with those asset owners based on mutual understanding. It also helps deliver on the team’s mission to protect the business’ brand and reputation.
Why Watch
Looking ahead, Howland and her team are heavily focused on continuing to drive holistic visibility of the corporate environment to best protect the business’ information, brand and reputation. They will also continue to focus on educating the workforce on information security best practices.
“I have gotten a lot of reaction to one of my favorite quotes that I’ve had on my whiteboard in the office, from legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden: ‘If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?’ Howland said. “This concept is true for many things, but it really resonates from a cybersecurity perspective, as it reinforces that it’s important build the foundation the right way. Bake security in from the start, don’t bolt it on later.”
