Steve Hatfield
Head of US ESG, Carlyle
Steve Hatfield leads U.S.-related ESG efforts at Carlyle. In his position, he’s helped StandardAero and Asplundh develop an ESG strategy and program and set a net zero carbon reduction target.
“This was a proactive effort where we collaborated closely with the management teams and their recently-hired ESG directors,” Hatfield said.
Both companies have a significant opportunity to use ESG practices to meet customer expectations and drive long-term commercial success. StandardAero is one of the world’s largest maintenance, repair and overhaul providers with over 50 locations globally. The company recognized energy and carbon reduction as a practical extension of its GreenerMRO initiative, a multiyear program to reduce, reuse and recycle precious resources that promote a circular economy.
Asplundh is a utility contractor offering services such as tree pruning and removal, right-of-way clearing and maintenance, vegetation management and emergency storm work. Carlyle is helping both companies develop decarbonization plans to prioritize initiatives that maximize ROI and carbon reduction. At Asplundh, the focus is on improving fleet fuel efficiency.
Why Watch
In 2023, Hatfield and his team are heavily focused on driving the implementation of energy management projects and using ESG as a sales lever. Efforts will concentrate on helping businesses reduce their energy consumption systematically. Carlyle’s portfolio companies have discovered that creating products and services that address significant ESG drivers downstream can enhance commercial success.
“Steve leads Carlyle’s portfolio companies in a wide range of sustainability initiatives,” said Doug Brandely, managing director at Carlyle. “His deep experience and commercial approach make him a trusted partner to our portfolio management teams as they look to develop and achieve their ESG goals.”
