The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Pinnacle Awards were announced Oct. 11, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 30.
Next is Executive Assistant of the Year (Private Company) finalist Erin Miles, who’s executive assistant to the CEO at DMI. Here, she talks success in her current role, turning points in her career, learning from failures and more.
What has made you successful in your current role?
My current role is constantly evolving, and I think my ability to evolve with it has been a huge part of my success. Additionally, my ability to track down information when needed, through whatever means, has been a secret superpower as well.
What was a turning point or inflection point in your career?
My turning point was likely when I figured out what it meant to be an EA and how important that role is (especially when you support a CEO). It took me a few years to fully grasp my position. Once that happened, I was able to jump in, embrace the position and make it my own. It’s been a fun ride.
What’s one key thing you learned from a failure you had?
To never make it again! Once you send someone to the airport on a holiday with an international itinerary, but not a fully booked ticket, you don’t ever make that mistake again.
What’s your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
For someone not exactly sure where they fit into a company but who knows that they belong in the “business world,” I would definitely tell them to start with an administrative role. There, you will get an opportunity to see and learn everything behind the scenes and then make an informed decision as you move forward with your career.
