Iron Mountain Inc. has been awarded a $6.7 million contract with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, assisting the agency in migrating millions of patent files.

Under the multiyear contract, Iron Mountain will relocate approximately 4.6 million patent files from their current storage location. That effort also includes capturing file level metadata, packing, removal and transportation of all records to Iron Mountain’s secure storage facility.

“Our facilities are purpose-built for agency needs, with modernized services that reduce operational expenses and real property footprints, while improving the security and accessibility of government-owned records,” said Michael Lewis, ‎vice president and general manager, Iron Mountain Government Services. “We look forward to assisting USPTO’s efforts to reduce their real-property footprint and associated operating expenses, allowing the agency to focus on mission objectives.”

Iron Mountain will also perform all records management tasks associated with these records, including retrievals, refiles, disposition, accessioning and destruction.

The contract’s base year will run until July 2018, with four additional 1-year option periods, and has a total value of $6.7 million, if all options are exercised.
