JSI has elected Monica Valdes Lupi, managing director at the Kresge Foundation, to its board of directors.
She brings 25 years of experience in public health policy, strategy and implementation across city, state and nonprofits.

At the Kresge Foundation, Valdes Lupi leads initiatives focused on building equitable health systems. Since assuming the role in 2020, she has partnered with communities to support well-being through food policy development, community safety and leadership development.
Valdes Lupi was a senior fellow at the de Beaumont Foundation, where she advised on policy initiatives addressing critical public health issues and worked to expand health access. She also served as a senior adviser to the CDC Foundation, supporting efforts to identify and address gaps in local health departments’ response and recovery activities.
Earlier, she served as executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission, overseeing the city’s Emergency Medical Services, the largest homeless services program in New England, school-based health centers and other public health services. As deputy commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, she managed day-to-day operations across public health hospitals and regulatory bodies.
She also served as the first chief program officer for health systems transformation at the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.
“JSI is honored to welcome to our Board a leader of such profound passion and experience—someone who has dedicated her entire career to the very heart of our mission,” said JSI Board Chair Dr. Sandro Galea.
