From NASA AI to Natsec: Kevin Mackey’s Path to Leading Epoch Concepts

    Kevin Mackey, Epoch Concepts

Kevin Mackey brings 32 years of experience to his role as president of Epoch Concepts, built on a career of driving growth for IT solutions providers and forging lasting relationships with federal and commercial clients.

As president, Mackey works closely with the CEO to align business units with strategic goals. Previously, as chief revenue officer, he shaped the solutions sales organization and built growth-oriented revenue streams — all while pursuing a career-long passion for innovation.

“I began my career in technology working on artificial intelligence projects at NASA, an experience that cemented my passion for innovation and problem-solving,” he told WashingtonExec.

Mackey later moved into the private sector, taking on leadership roles at Sun Microsystems, where he grew federal sales and gained a deep understanding of mission-critical IT environments. He also served as district sales manager for the Air Force, Missile Defense Agency and NATO at Network Appliance.

In 2006, Mackey joined Epoch Concepts as part of its founding leadership team, leveraging his technical expertise and business acumen to help grow the company from a small, specialized team into a nationally recognized solutions provider.

Today, he leads the company’s strategic vision, ensuring Epoch Concepts delivers secure, cutting-edge solutions for both federal and commercial customers.

Below, Mackey discusses his career path, his personal connection to Epoch Concepts’ mission, and where he and his team see growth opportunities ahead.

Why was this the path you chose, and how influential was it to your career?

I’ve always been drawn to the intersection of advanced technology and real-world impact. Early exposure to complex, high-stakes projects showed me that IT, when done right, can solve some of the most pressing challenges in national security, defense, and business. That belief has guided every career decision I’ve made and shaped the way I lead today: focusing on innovation, strategic growth, and delivering tangible outcomes for customers.

Do you have a personal connection to the current mission you support? If so, please explain.

Absolutely. Supporting our nation’s defense and critical infrastructure is not just a business mission — it’s a personal one. Many of our customers’ missions protect lives, safeguard freedoms, and secure the future for generations to come. Having family and friends who have served in the military makes this work deeply meaningful to me, and I take pride in leading a company that plays a role in enabling those missions.

What are your current top priorities and responsibilities? How do these relate to your company’s overall mission/growth strategy?

My top priorities are expanding Epoch Concepts’ role as a trusted strategic partner, growing our federal business while deepening our presence in the commercial sector. This means uniting edge computing with data analytics to address localized needs, strengthening our cybersecurity offerings, and ensuring we stay ahead of emerging threats. These priorities align directly with our growth strategy: to deliver secure, high-value solutions that draw on our classified environment expertise and translate it into commercial advantage.

Where do you and your team see growth opportunities in your current field or portfolio you support, or what do you anticipate to be your customers’ top pain points?

We see tremendous opportunity in the convergence of edge computing, AI, and cybersecurity, particularly for customers seeking to process and secure data closer to the source. On the federal side, modernization mandates and zero-trust security requirements are driving demand for integrated solutions. In the commercial space, we’re seeing heightened concerns around ransomware, supply chain security, and regulatory compliance. These areas represent both growth potential and urgent customer pain points.

How are you and your team planning to address/prepare for these opportunities?

We’re investing in strategic partnerships, like our collaboration with Second Front Systems, to accelerate secure solution delivery. Internally, we’re expanding our pre-sales engineering capabilities, refining our consultative approach, and training our teams on next-generation technologies. By aligning our technical expertise with evolving customer needs, we’re positioned to respond quickly, implement securely, and deliver measurable value.

How important is mentorship & networking in GovCon? Were they influential to your career?

Mentorship and networking are essential in GovCon. This is an industry built on trust, relationships, and shared mission, both are qualities that develop over time through genuine connection. Throughout my career, I’ve benefited from mentors who offered guidance, perspective, and opportunities, and I’ve made it a priority to pay that forward by supporting others, whether through industry groups like GovEvolve or within the Epoch team.

What is something most people don’t know about you personally?

I’m passionate about giving back to the community. I support the Denver Rescue Mission, which helps individuals experiencing homelessness through rehabilitation programs and job training, and Volley4Charity, which raises funds for local nonprofits. Outside of work, I co-chair GovEvolve, advocating for small business interests in the federal space.
