Lessons from a Coal Mining Town: How Accenture Federal Services’ Garland Garris Draws from his West Virginia Roots

In this episode of “Humble Beginnings,” we sit down with Garland Garris, associate director and lead for quantum science, zero trust and cloud security at Accenture Federal Services, as he shares his journey from growing up in the coal mining town of Eccles, West Virginia, to leading IT initiatives in state and federal government.

Garris developed a growth mindset early, shaped by foraging with his dad, a love of reading from his mom and a deep appreciation of faith instilled by his grandmother. These experiences mirrored the strong work ethic of the tight-knit community where he was raised.

Like many in Eccles, Garris went to work in the coal mines shortly after high school. The work was physically demanding and required sharp problem-solving skills that attracted — and built — capable, resilient people. But after seeing the toll it could take on his health, he decided to go to college.

That decision marked the start of a nearly 30-year career in public sector IT, including roles with the state of West Virginia and later the FBI.

Tune in to hear how his career unfolded, lessons he learned along the way and the work he leads today at Accenture Federal Services.
