The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Chief Officer Awards were announced April 8, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person June 4.
Next is Daniel Mitchell, chief financial officer at Cook Inlet Region, and a finalist in the CFO of the Year (Annual Revenue Greater than $500M) category. In this spotlight, he reflects on key achievements, offers advice for those following a similar path, shares current priorities and more.
What key achievements did you have in 2024 / 2025?
CIRI, an Alaska Native Corporation with more than 9,500 shareholders entered a new era of growth in 2024, led by its new CEO, Swami Iyer. In my role as CFO, I supported this transformation through on boarding new executive team members, resetting the Company’s long term investment objectives and embarking on an ambitious M&A strategy. Consequently, I helped lead due diligence efforts that resulted in the acquisition of OSC Edge, a leading provider of IT engineering, integration and testing, and data management services to government and private-sector businesses. This acquisition has expanded CIRI’s footprint across the world and enhanced CIRI’s value to its shareholders.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
Primary areas of focus going forward include building a best-in-class enterprise culture which we will achieve through hiring top talent, optimizing financial reporting systems and designing and implementing a shared services model. At the same time, we will continue executing our ambitious M&A strategy, targeting a series of acquisitions to complement our current portfolio companies while also forging into new business lines. This strategy will be supported by strategic divestures of existing passive investments.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Develop a high level of intellectual curiosity. Today’s CFO must navigate a volatile business environment driven by macroeconomic disruptions, geopolitical tensions, technological advances, and changing workforce expectations. Aligning yourself with good mentors throughout your career is a must. I would also encourage future leaders to participate in leadership roles in your local communities. Serving on Boards has afforded me the great opportunity to engage with other business leaders and tackle challenging issues. These opportunities help refine one’s intellectual curiosity along the way.
Fun Fact: What is something about you that most people do not know about?
I have a passion for electronic music and used to DJ in my early years.
