The finalists for WashingtonExec’s 2024 Pinnacle Awards were announced Sept. 20, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 21.
Next is John Roman, vice president of contracts and procurement at ECS, and finalist in the Contracts Executive of the Year, Public Company, category. Here, he talks about recent achievements, shares career advice and more.
What key achievements did you have in 2024?
In 2024, one of my key achievements was successfully navigating a complex contract negotiation that involved multiple stakeholders and high-pressure deadlines. We managed to negotiate a solution that met the customer’s needs, reduced costs by 15%, and ensured the mission was completed on time. I’m also proud of my ongoing work with industry organizations like NCMA and PSC, where I help bridge the gap between government and industry to improve contracting processes and create relationships that help drive business success.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
Moving forward, my focus is on continuing to foster open collaboration between ECS and our government customers. It’s important to streamline contract engagements and ensure both parties benefit from efficient, cost-effective solutions. This focus is crucial because it directly supports mission success by allowing us to deliver high-quality outcomes while navigating complex procurement processes. The relationships we build with customers are important to the success of both ECS and its customers. They allow us to engage before minor issues turn into potential problems.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
My advice is to develop strong communication and negotiation skills while always prioritizing transparency, collaboration, and relationships. The world of contract management is smaller than you think. It’s important to balance customer needs with the goals of your own organization. Be prepared to manage complex challenges, and always seek ways to find mutually beneficial solutions that drive mission success.
Fun Fact: What is something about you that most people do not know?
My parents were both immigrants to the U.S. from the former Yugoslavia, now Croatia. My mom came to the U.S. as a WWII refugee. One of my sisters lives in Croatia and my parents left us a house on the tiny island that my Dad grew up on.
