The finalists for WashingtonExec’s 2024 Pinnacle Awards were announced Sept. 20, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 21.
Next is Mike Diggins, senior vice president of homeland security solutions at Leidos, and finalist in the DHS Executive of the Year, Public Company, category. Here, he talks about recent achievements, shares career advice and more.
What key achievements did you have in 2024?
Working alongside DHS, we are applying cutting-edge capabilities in cloud computing, mission software, biometrics, and transportation security equipment deployment in accordance with DHS and component strategic plans and continuous improvement approaches. This year we’ve delivered mission capability that not only advances customer experience, but also secures our nation.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
We look forward to supporting our customers’ initiatives in securing the homeland and protecting our forces around the world with smarter solutions in mission software, full-spectrum cyber, and trusted mission AI. Threats are ever evolving and it’s critically important to leverage smarter technology solutions that can vastly improve security posture while providing efficiencies.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
A mentor early in my career told me to frequently look at my current role and make sure it is relevant to the critical missions of customers and in alignment with company strategy. I’ve heeded this advice throughout my career, and I’ve found that having roles at the centerpiece of strategy energizes me because I know that I am making a difference every day. Coming full circle, it’s also important as your career progresses to become a mentor for others and give back to your fellow employees. The teammates you work with are the greatest asset to your career.
Fun Fact: What is something about you that most people do not know about?
I grew up in a small mountain town in northern Idaho so I love the outdoors – so much so that I am now a part-time rancher raising cattle on my property.
