The finalists for WashingtonExec’s 2024 Pinnacle Awards were announced Sept. 20, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 21.

Next is Clifford Wilborn, Joint Sharing Sites — Federal Health Care Center director, and finalist in the Government Healthcare Project of the Year category for the Federal Electronic Health Record, FEHRM, DOD, VA and Lovell FHCC team project. Here, he talks about recent achievements, shares career advice and more.

What key achievements did you have in 2024?

The most notable achievement for the team was the successful synchronous implementation of the federal electronic health record at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center joint sharing site in March 2024. This is the first time the FEHRM, Department of Defense (DOD), and Department of Veterans Affairs deployed the federal EHR together at the same site. Lovell FHCC creates a foundation for joint operations at other sites and illustrates how large health care systems can work together without technology being a barrier. This implementation effort was culmination of a three-year project that included a multi-agency team led by the Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization office in collaboration with DOD and VA.

What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?

The primary focus going forward will be optimizing existing capabilities and expanding interoperability across the federal EHR system. For Lovell FHCC, our team is squarely focused on initiating the Enterprise Requirements Convergence Opportunities process, completion of a second assessment/adjudication activity targeting several high priority topics to assess the opportunity for converging capabilities between DOD and VA.

What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?

Identify challenges and positions that facilitate growth and development. Develop a solid professional development plan that puts you on a trajectory to eventually become a Program Manager, include SMART goals, and remain focused on achieving your objective. Reassess and refine your plan on an annual basis. Lastly, have a good work/life balance.
