Jay Meil, SAIC chief data scientist and director of AI algorithmic warfare and data exploration, delivered a presentation on the role of artificial intelligence in modern warfare at TechNet Augusta in Augusta, Georgia on Aug. 20.

In his presentation, Meil stressed the need to implement AI at the tactical level to support various operational environments. He acknowledged challenges like limited, disrupted or low-bandwidth conditions but emphasized that integrating AI into defense operations is essential.

“This is not easy at all,” Meil said. “There is a lot that has to get done to get to this point. But I can tell you it is absolutely important for mission to be able to do this and to be able to deploy these models.”

SAIC is focused on leveraging AI to aid decision-making during conflicts. This involves using AI to help tip and queue the best options for action by allowing machines and technology to handle these repetitive and data-heavy tasks, leaving humans free to focus on critical thinking and high-stakes decision-making.

“Operational AI needs to provide utility to the warfighter in whatever environment they are in,” Meil said.Applying AI, he added, involves analyzing satellite images to detect changes, track multiple assets or accurately locate critical targets, which is crucial in a fast-paced environment.

To ensure AI systems are reliable and efficient, SAIC has made significant strides in operationalizing AI technologies across defense and intelligence sectors, including computer vision and natural language processing. Meil emphasized these AI models must perform effectively with sparse data and lightweight systems.

SAIC’s strategy includes edge-optimized AI models, quantizing models, ruggedizing low-power systems, distributed learning and security measures. Techniques like adversarial learning and robust communications are employed to ensure the AI systems remain dependable across defense and intelligence sectors.

Focusing on understanding and overcoming technical challenges, Meil said SAIC continues to push the boundaries of AI in national defense, providing its solutions meet the developing needs of today’s warfighters.
