    Wes Anderson, Microsoft Federal

    Wes Anderson

    Vice President, Defense, Microsoft Federal

In his role with Microsoft Federal, Wes Anderson has supported the acceleration of the Defense Department’s technological transformation in a time of unprecedented near-peer competition.

“My team has achieved this by delivering DOD mission needs through secure solutions and services powered by the cloud, expanding the use and capabilities of at-the-edge AI, and bringing rapid innovation to JADC2 goals, adoption of the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) and directly supporting our warfighters in Ukraine,” Anderson said.

Anderson and his team partnered with the DOD to bring the latest in cloud based security innovation to achieve the department’s zero trust objectives ahead of the goal to achieve full zero trust implementation by 2027.

In this new era of AI, they also supported the technological and cultural change management factors that enable the adoption of this critical technology at increasing levels of classification.

“As the DOD pivots towards countering geopolitical threats, the urgency to develop the next generation of mission systems is real,” Anderson said. “But you can’t build and effectively operate 6th gen weapons systems with 4th generation tech.  We have developed and are scaling the capability to provide enterprise IT underlying the next generation of mission systems for the Department of Defense at this critical inflection point.”

Candice Ling, senior vice president of Microsoft Federal, commented on Anderson’s success.

“Wes’s 25+ years at Microsoft have been defined by his unwavering commitment to our federal customers, and his deep understanding of the industry has helped us deliver innovative solutions that support their unique missions,” Ling said. “We look forward to continued innovation, growth, and success in our work with federal defense agencies.”

    Why Watch

In 2024, Anderson and his team will continue to bring new cloud innovation to enable our warfighters on the battlefield. Going forward, they see AI impacting every part of how the DOD does business and executes their mission, and Anderson and his team are here to support that.

“Microsoft will continue to invest in classified clouds and capabilities where the DOD needs them most, enabling the adoption of cloud-based AI and generative AI technologies across the department,” Anderson said. “You saw this most recently in our February and May announcements bringing Azure OpenAI Service to the Secret and Top Secret Government Clouds.”

In today’s geopolitical landscape, Anderson and his team will also place focus on arming the DOD with capabilities to bring next-generation weapons systems forward to counter the imminent threats from near peer competitors. “These actions reinforce our 40+ year commitment to providing the latest commercial innovations and technologies in support of the DOD’s missions and initiatives,” he said.

Fun Fact: While Anderson’s driving the defense business at Microsoft, he can also be found driving a tractor on his farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland planting his next crop of wheat, soybeans or corn to take to market.
