    Mo Hessabi, MetroStar

The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Chief Officer Awards were announced March 28, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person May 10.

Next is Mo Hessabi, chief operating officer at MetroStar, and finalist in the Private Company Chief Operating Officer category. Here, he shares key achievements, focus areas going forward, career advice and more.

What key achievements did you have in 2023?

In 2023, our company truly transformed; we achieved 60-plus percent full and open unrestricted work and will reach over 80% by 2024, all accomplished with strong, organic growth. All these achievements have increased our enterprise value, and I am excited to continue evolving and innovating with our talented team.

What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?

Our company’s forward momentum is fueled by our focus on innovation. Through our investments across the Innovation Lab and Operations Excellence teams, we are achieving remarkable milestones that align closely with our customers’ missions to ensure we are a trusted partner steadfast in supporting their growing digital modernization and AI/ML objectives. Through collaboration and our solution accelerators, we’ve cultivated the next generation of applied intelligence solutions that resonate with our clients, fostering a culture of innovation and progress supporting our nation.

What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?

Career success often hinges on imagination and a refusal to accept the first answer. Keep digging deeper to ensure you possess accurate information, helping guide others and yourself toward the best decisions. I also highly recommend that others in this role stay connected across our community through associations, events, peer groups, and strong-sounding boards.

Furthermore, building your confidence in your abilities is paramount; trust your instincts while remaining receptive to external feedback. Flexibility is key — be willing to adapt to changing circumstances by attentively observing your surroundings. This blend of self-assurance and adaptability forms a solid foundation for navigating a dynamic career path that will change from quarter to year.

Fun Fact: What is something about you that most people do not know?

My favorite hobby is spending quality time with my wife and son. Whether playing games together, going on grocery runs, or exploring the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum, each moment shared with them is the best.

Additionally, I love unwinding with some television after a long day. My latest binge is “A Gentleman in Moscow” and other thrillers. And, of course, I can’t forget the excitement of cheering for my favorite football team — Washington Football.
