Next is Mike Uster, chief information officer and chief technology officer of ManTech, and finalist in the Public & Private Company Chief Information Officer category. Here, he shares key achievements, focus areas going forward, career advice and more.
What key achievements did you have in 2023?
Enhancing ManTech’s Zero Trust Environment with AI Integration: In 2023, we seamlessly integrated AI technologies within our Zero Trust framework, adding comprehensive enterprise guardrails. This pivotal move equipped all ManTech staff with a robust and secure productivity tool, significantly boosting efficiency and safety across the organization.
Leading Enterprise Digital Transformation with Google Workspace: We spearheaded the digital transformation by transitioning to Google Workspace in a FedRAMP High environment as the first Federal Systems Integrator to “Prove it here first.” This move not only optimized our operational efficiencies, but also created a best-in-class digital offering with stringent federal compliance standards, ensuring secure and seamless collaboration across the enterprise.
What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the mission?
My primary focus is to continue democratizing AI across the enterprise, which will lead to a significant reduction in digital friction while simultaneously enhancing both employee productivity and satisfaction. By expanding the use of AI, we can ensure that every function within our organization can leverage its power daily. This focus not only accelerates and refines everyday processes but also bespoke & unique processes, improving the speed and accuracy of operations and driving a more streamlined and efficient work environment.
Reducing digital friction is also crucial in creating a highly secure and user-friendly environment. Streamlining access to necessary tools and information while maintaining robust security protocols minimizes the time employees spend navigating complex systems. This allows for more focused and efficient work, reduces stress and boosts morale by creating a supportive digital workspace. Our efforts in simplifying digital interactions underpin our commitment to enhancing operational capabilities while ensuring the highest levels of security and efficiency.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
I am always inspired by Joseph Campbell’s words: “If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a track that has been there all along, waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living.” Pursue what excites you and aligns with your values. Let your passion guide your choices, serving as the foundation of your professional journey. Trust in your unique path and let your enthusiasm drive innovation and excellence.
Fun Fact: What is something about you that most people do not know about?
I enjoy astronomy because it feels like traveling through space without ever leaving my backyard. Every time I look up at the night sky, I’m struck by the vastness of the universe and how it puts my problems into perspective. For me, gazing at the stars is a constant reminder of the endless possibilities out there. It’s a hobby that keeps me curious and always eager to learn more about what’s up above
