Rob Carey
President, Cloudera Government Solutions Inc.
While there are many challenges the public sector faces today, capitalizing on the “hype” associated with artificial intelligence seems to top the list, said Rob Carey.
AI is a game-changing technology that can affect a litany of business and mission processes, ranging from cybersecurity to fraud detection, to healthcare, supply chain visibility and more.
The government is moving with great haste to develop trusted data-driven decisions, but the end all be all seems to be how to harness the promise of AI. Any success derived from AI will be based upon trusted data. Second to the AI expectation is the public sector’s development of an effective and affordable cybersecurity defense strategy.
“We are fundamentally performing cyber defense the same way we did 20-25 years ago, just with a growing number of complex tools,” Carey said. “The public sector will need to simplify the approach to cyber and develop meaningful metrics that illustrate the ROI associated with cyber investments.”
Why Watch
Carey’s team is focused on providing full data lifecycle support to agencies, from simple data collection and movement, to streaming analytics and data lakehouse storage, to implementing AI/ML to assist in improving decision making.
This effort will include providing hybrid cloud management solutions and enabling the use of trusted data to support implementation of AI. This is key, because knowing where data is located and associated within a mission challenge and moving it while maintaining trust is central to successfully delivering agile decision-making.
Since the government is funded mainly via specific programs, applications and data are likely both on- and off-premise, in clouds or data centers ⏤ creating a hybrid cloud environment as the basis for decision-making. This hybrid environment requires a single pane of glass to manage the data flow process in support of mission-critical operations.
