The finalists for WashingtonExec’s 2023 Pinnacle Awards were announced Sept. 25, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 16.
Next is Systems Security Officer finalist in the Private & Public Companies category April Johnson, who is facilities and security manager at BrainGu. Here, she talks about proud career moments and career advice.
What are you most proud of having been a part of in your current organization?
BrainGu’s 2023 incredible Superior rating we received from DCSA. Over the last three years I have brought a new perspective to BrainGu while preserving the culture. I have built a strong foundation which starts by supporting employees through each process, and ensuring they understand the policy and procedures from beginning to end.
One key component is staying on top of training, policy changes, and accountability for an entire portfolio of people, contracts and our facilities. At BrainGu, we prioritize solid support, ensuring we have the right resources and guidance to overcome any challenges we might encounter. That support comes from our Senior Leadership that puts security as a primary objective.
What’s your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
My best career advice for those who want to follow in a similar path is to always find a profession that genuinely interests their passions, rather than merely pursuing a paycheck. In my experience, embracing calculated risks leads to great rewards, and effectively using available resources is key. In my case, I benefited from the expertise provided by leading organizations such as NCMS and DCSA, in addition to seeking mentorship from BrainGu’s leadership.
I would always recommend that you do not hesitate to seek guidance from experts and remain open to constructive criticism. Stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing challenges are pivotal to your personal and professional growth.
Lastly, remember that every interaction is an opportunity to learn and demonstrating respect toward others and building meaningful relationships within your industry will take you far.
I feel strongly that having clear communication with employees, setting well-defined expectations, and fostering trust are foundations to creating a safe work environment.
