    Paul Farnan, Army

    Paul Farnan

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, DOD

Paul Farnan’s biggest recent achievement was the 2022 publication of the Army Climate Strategy. The U.S. Army is the first U.S. military service to publish such a strategy, which set significant but obtainable goals that will reduce the Army’s emissions while also making it a more capable fighting force.

    Why Watch

In 2023, Farnan and his team are heavily focused on significantly expanding the amount of renewable energy generation and long-term battery storage on Army installations, which will provide needed energy resilience for the force while also significantly increasing the amount of carbon-free generation available to both the Army and the general public. This is an overall environmental win for everyone.

“Climate change is a national security threat that also effects how and where the Army operates,” he said. “The Army is committed to reducing our emissions through reducing our fossil fuel demand both in our vehicles and on our installation. These steps will not only address the threat of climate change but will increase our installations’ resilience and our forces’ capabilities.”
