The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Pinnacle Awards were announced Oct. 11, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place live, in-person Nov. 30.

Next is Executive Assistant of the Year (Private Company) finalist Keon Burton, who’s the executive assistant to the CEO and chief operating officer at The Asia Group. Here, he talks key achievements, primary focus areas going forward, career advice and more.

What key achievements did you have in 2021/2022?

Earlier this year, the Department of the Army awarded me the Civilian Service Achievement Medal for exceptional service while serving at Joint Base Myer Henderson Hall Base Defense Operations Center as an Operations and Plans Specialist.

What are your primary focus areas going forward, and why are those so important to the future of the nation?

I’m most focused on operations and “back of house” logistics. Successful government and business operations work best when there is a capable and motivated operations team to lead and execute key behind-the-scenes aspects. If the back of the house isn’t in order, then the front won’t be either.

How do you help shape the next generation of government leaders/industry leaders?

I try to share as much knowledge and experience as I can so that other folks beginning their careers can pick up best practices. When everyone knows more, we all win.

What’s your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?

My best advice: make the most of every employment opportunity and do not make the same mistake twice. Hardly anything is more important than demonstrating the ability to learn.
