Charles Clancy, MITRE

Charles Clancy

Senior Vice President, General Manager, MITRE Labs and Chief Futurist, MITRE

As senior vice president for MITRE Labs and MITRE’s chief futurist, Charles Clancy has aligned the company’s resources and expertise in remote sensing, data analytics and artificial intelligence/machine learning to address critical climate and environmental challenges. Under his leadership, MITRE is partnering with government, academia and industry in a whole-of-nation approach at the core of MITRE’s mission: solving problems for a safer world.

Over the past year, Clancy guided the company’s launch of a portfolio of research and development projects in climate science and has increased MITRE’s climate support to the U.S. government by over 500%.

“Climate-related events are increasingly impacting our nation’s security and stability, while also increasing the potential for conflicts across socioeconomic, environmental, military and technological domains,” Clancy said. “Every corner of the world is threatened by climate change — especially socially and economically disadvantaged communities. It’s important we get this right.”

Why Watch

Clancy is leading MITRE Labs in driving innovation to accelerate development of next-generation capabilities to tackle issues of climate resilience. For example, MITRE established the MITRE BlueTech Lab as a national resource for advancing undersea testing, innovation and collaboration, in partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, MassChallenge, the University of Rhode Island and others. The state-of-the-art facility will open in late 2022.

With maritime technology deeply engrained in many key climate challenges, Clancy and his team will be cultivating the MITRE BlueTech Lab’s capabilities as a foundation for positive impact in climate science research and development.
